Ethics Vs. Practices

HR Professional play a vital role in the process of creating and maintaining ethical organizations- writing ethics and compliance, procedures and programs to discipline ethical breaches. HR Professionals can benefit their organizations by planning effective ethics related programs. But then it is usually said that anything is possible in corporate world. Very often ethics and morals are taken aback in business and most of the times HR's are left to bear the brunt of these ethical and legal issues. The execution of this task mostly ends up in resignations. According to a recent survey, 16 percent of respondents said that they had to quit their job as an HR because of ethical reasons which includes lying by management, violations of ethical laws by the senior management, false records or reports etc.

Whenever business and ethics collide, many a times HR Professional are caught in the middle. They are asked to keep their conscience aside and follow the principle of 'everything is fair in business game'. Thus, the HR Professional is forced to think that where does his loyalty lie? to his company or to his personal and professional ethics. But these issues make an impact only on HR Professionals because either they are sacked out of their job or they are forced to resign. The organizations are least bothered because they don't mind flouting the norms if they are making huge profits.

One fine example of forced resignation is given below.

It is believed that HR can make things better in a company. But not every time this belief turns into reality. When Gretchen joined  a research and development firm she immediately pointed out the urgency of employee handbook and proper document policies. But she was told by company that these things were unnecessary as they run like a family and their strategy is to have fun and make money. But Gretchen soon realized that they had no strategy and no policies at all. She planned to inform this to her boss but he expressed a casual attitude because he was aware of it and further more he was not in a position to raise his voice as a real danger involved if he would have questioned their illegal activities. The prime reason that Gretchen and Bruce didn't raise their voices against this illegal activity because their company was owned by a very powerful and influential family and nothing could harm them.

Finally, Gretchen and Bruce were left with no other option and they had to resign. In fact, Bruce opted to take a position at a new company with a $15,000 pay cut. The loss of $15,000 in annual income was difficult but at least his conscience won and now he is leading a life full of dignity and respect.

Such ethical related issues are becoming a prominent feature in business and the only  option you are left is either getting involved in these malpractices or by resigning and taking up a new job.
