In order to handle stress we cannot change our environment, this generally happens because we do not have the power to change a situation or we have to perform under pressure. To get the feeling of relaxation imagery is an important tool.
In order to reduce stress imagery is important, especially when combined with physical relaxation methods such as deep breathing.
Sometimes the environment can be very relaxing and sometimes be very stressful. But by using your imagery you can enjoy and feel the situation to be relaxing that is the main motto of imagery. It’s up to you how you take the situation and feel more comfortable.
Through biofeedback equipment we can show the importance of imagery. When you see a relaxing scene ,you can notice the stress reduction in your body and when you image a stressful situation you can feel the stress in your body. When this happens for the first time, it can be very shocking for you.
HOW IS IMAGERY USEFUL?
Basically there are two situations where imagery proves very effectively. Firstly, when we are relaxing and secondly when you are preparing for performance.
Imagery in relaxation
Imagery in relaxation means to imagine a situation, place or event that you think is safe, restful and lovely. You can imagine using all your senses, like the sound when it rains, the smell of wet mud and grass, the taste of wine, the wind on the seashore etc.
When you think complex images like lying on a beach in a deserted area, then you “see” sea and sand around you ,”hear” the waves breaking on the rocks, ”smell” the wet mud, and “feel” the wind blowing on the beach. Other uses of imagery relaxation are to feel that stress is reduced from your body.
Imagery in preparation and rehearsal
When some event or programme takes place, that time imagery is useful. You can imagine the event in your mind. Top sports people use this method of imagery. They perform well because they keep on rehearsing their imagination practically. When the unpleasant events are rehearsed by using imagery, that means you get the experience in advance and it results positively.
Imagery allows you to experience your goals in advance, it creates confidence which you need to do something well. Usually this technique is also used by sports people.
