Diversity Amongst Employees

The key to effective relationships at work with people from different backgrounds is not to point out the differences, but the similarities first. Diversity at work enhances the quality and adds a challenge to work. Effective diversity in work relations are important for the success of every person, whether you are a HR professional, a manager, a supervisor, a coworker, a staff member or a business owner.

In a research in US, 7500 employees across work levels from different industries were asked to reply to 130 questions pertaining to their workplaces. These answers were sorted out to judge the diversity patterns from different demographics including the white section vs. the minorities, women vs. men, and employees from different age brackets.

The research showed that the similarities were more than the differences, and more specifically in those categories considered most important by the respondents. Following are the factors enlisted as important by them:
  • the business plans of the company
  • opportunities to utilise their skills at work
  • competitive reward packages
  • extent to which suggestions from employees are taken into consideration

People agreed on the points which organisations should improve on:
  • The input by the employee and promotion of the best performers and at the same time helping the poor performers to improve
  • The employees knowledge on how their work affects the internal as well as the external customers
  • Employees' knowledge on how their jobs contribute to the achievement of the business goals of the organisation
  • The work environment and its safety and the products and services of the company.

Suggestions

Key & Pfau recommended that organisations should concentrate on 4 key areas
  • Keeping the company on track, leading the competition and at the same time effective.
  • Provide necessary resources to employees, utilise their skills & talents in order to achieve the ultimate objectives of the organisation
  • Create the right work atmosphere where people would be interested in the work and at the same time enjoy being with their colleagues
  • Value & respect employees and give recognition to their contribution

Work can be exciting only when a feeling of accomplishment of mutual goals is present. Behave as though belong to a winning team. Only when you participate in any kind of team building events sponsored by your organisation would you get to know your colleagues better. Better still, be a part of the organising team.
