Performance appraisals related to job are needed in order to provide all relevant information about performance ranking. This information is useful in making decision related to salary fixation, confirmation, promotion, transfer and demotion. Feedback information is also provided by the performance appraisals about the level of achievements and behavior of subordinates. Through this we can identify the improvement and deficiencies in performance of the subordinates and reset our working standards, if required.

This appraisals help to counsel the subordinates through the information provided to them. The information help to figure out the deficiency in skills and knowledge of an employees, identify the needs for training and development, prescribe the ways of employees growth, and suggest the ways to correct placements.

The objective of performance appraisal is to attain various purpose. The first main purpose is to create and maintain a satisfied level for performance. Next purpose is contribution towards your employees growth and development through training, self and management programs. The third purpose is to create the understanding to superiors about their subordinates. They also guide the employees to job changes with the help of constant ranking. The fourth purpose is to give fair and equal compensation depending on their performance and facilitate for testing and validating selection tests, interview techniques are compared through their scores along with the performance appraisal ranks. The last purpose is to provide information to make decisions for layoff, assures the effectiveness of an organization through correcting the standards of an employees and suggesting the ways to change their behavior.

The content to be appraised has to be decided by every organization before the program is sanctioned. Content is identified on the basis of job analysis and may be in the form of contributing organizational objectives like production, cost saving, returns from capital etc. Other objective are based on behavior. There some objectives which measures job related results. Content to be appraised are different for purpose of appraisal and level of employees.
