How To Negotiate Your Salary


For any job, salary negotiation is an important aspect. It is also perceived as the trickiest part. Some common doubts raised are: when and how do I negotiate my salary?

Negotiation of salary depends upon the individual candidates applying for a position in a company with certain work experience or candidates applying for an entry level position in the company without any work experience. An employee looking for current advancement in an organization is another situation for salary negotiation. Reasons for each situation might be different, but the rules and regulation for salary negotiation remains the same.

1. Check out your salary range with the recruiters, competitors, internet etc 
2. Set a target for total salary.
3. Do not discuss about the salary from your side, wait for the interviewer to bring up the subject.
4. Say negotiable, when requirements related to salary is asked and write the same thing on application form. If information related to current salary is asked in the application form, then write to be covered during interview.
5. If salary requirements are asked, respond by asking the salary range for different positions.
6. Discuss benefits and salary separately. Benefits include insurance, relocation period, stock options, bonuses etc.
7. If you are shifting to new area then consider your cost of living also.

By following the above points you can get the chance to increase your salary. As the negotiation process is over. After that as you receive the offer letter, express your intention formally. If you are not ready to accept, be ready with your response. Send the letter that things did not work out and leave a positive impression about yourself.
